Abdesselam Ferdi is a Research Fellow at the Institute of Computer Science, University of Tartu. He received his PhD, MSc, and BSc degrees in Biomedical Engineering from Constantine 1 University, Algeria, in 2025, 2020, and 2018, respectively. Dr. Ferdi’s research interests focus on artificial intelligence and medical image analysis.

Vikash Maheshwari is a Junior Research Fellow and Ph.D. candidate at the University of Tartu. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Sindh, Pakistan, and a Master’s degree in Information Technology by Research, graduating with a High Achiever Award, from Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Malaysia. Before starting his doctoral studies, he served as a Graduate Research and Teaching Assistant at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. His research interests include Automated Machine Learning (AutoML), streaming data analytics, and concept drift detection and adaptation.

Kelem Negasi Amare is a Data Scientist with over four years of experience in Machine Learning and large-scale data engineering. He holds a B.Sc. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Addis Ababa University (AAU), where he developed a strong foundation in software development, data analysis, and computational problem-solving..In industry, he has worked on R&D projects developing AI-based solutions for mobile security. He is an experienced developer specializing in Python and Go, and his work includes designing and deploying ML-based phishing detection systems for mobile devices, including on-device model deployment and inference on Android and iOS. Kelem’s expertise spans large-scale data processing with Apache Spark and AWS Glue, as well as workflow orchestration using Airflow, Terraform, and Kubernetes.
Currently, Kelem is pursuing an MSc in Computer Science with a specialization in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Tartu. His research interests center on AI interpretability and explainability. He aims to bridge advanced technical capabilities with human-centered understanding, ensuring AI systems are transparent, trustworthy, and practically usable.

Andres Sebastian Caceres Valdiviezo is a Senior Software Engineer with over seven years of experience designing and delivering cloud-native applications and scalable microservices, primarily on AWS. He brings a strong background in React, Python, Go, and DevOps practices, with proven expertise in Kubernetes, Apache Kafka, and CI/CD automation. Andres has also contributed to building impactful e-commerce platforms and agriculture-focused applications, delivering solutions that improve efficiency and data-driven decision-making. Hassan Eldeeb graduated with a PhD in October 2024. Before he got his BSc and MSc degrees in Computer Engineering from Tanta University, Egypt. He previously worked as a researcher for Wireless Research Center (WRC) and InnoTech Inc. During his work experience, Hassan developed mathematical optimization, indoor/outdoor positioning, data analysis, and machine learning projects. He worked in medical and transportation machine learning based systems. Hassan also worked as a teaching assistant at the University of Tanta in Egypt. Prof. Dr. Ahmed Awad was the leader of the Data Systems Group from October 2020 till September 2023. Ahmed got his Ph.D. from Hasso-Plattner Institute, Potsdam University, Germany in 2010. Before that, he got his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from Cairo University in 2000 and 2003 respectively. Ahmed’s research interests are in big streams processing, complex event processing, and applications thereof, especially in business process management. Dr. Awad has more than 60 publications in international journals such as Information Systems, Intelligent Information Systems, Cluster Computing, conferences such as BPM, CAiSE, ICPM, WWW, Big Compe, ICDE, and workshops.
Prof. Awad’s research interests are in data streams, complex event processing, and their applications in process mining. Another field of interest is online machine learning. Namely, drift detection on data streams and online recommender systems. Last but not least, large-scale process analytics, is of interest as well. Specifically, devising distributed analytics algorithms for process discovery, conformance checking, and compliance monitoring. Additionally, applying automated machine learning principles to minimize the human intervention with the choice of best-fitting discovery, conformance algorithms.

Ahmed Wael is a dedicated data science professional with a strong foundation in communication and information engineering, holding a B.Sc. from Zewail City of Science and Technology, Cairo. He has extensive experience in both academia and industry, having served as an AI Research Assistant and Teaching Assistant at Zewail City. His work includes developing deep learning models for video analytics, mentoring students, and revamping academic curricula.
In the industrial domain, Ahmed has held the role of Senior Data Scientist at Giza Systems, where he led R&D initiatives for chatbots, advanced analytics products, and the development of an AutoML engine.
Ahmed is currently pursuing his master’s degree at the University of Tartu Institute of Computer Science while working as a Data Science Specialist in the Data Systems Research Group. His current research focuses on Automated Machine Learning explainability, with a particular emphasis on generating realistic synthetic data that preserves privacy.

Ali Maharramov began his studies in Computer Science at Baku State University in 2018 while gaining research experience at the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences Institute of Control Systems. He worked on localizing tasks in aerial imagery and contributed to a published article on geographical coordinates from aero image data.
Following his Bachelor’s degree, Ali continued his studies at Tartu University in 2022, focusing on computer vision and deep learning. He has since defended his Master’s thesis on an end-to-end multitask deep learning model for autonomous vehicles.
Currently, Ali’s research interest is in AutoML, where he applies AutoML techniques to solve instance-agnostic solutions.

Erick Martin Fiestas Sorogastua received both his MSc degree in Systems Engineering and BSc in Electronics Engineering from Universidad Privada Antenor Orrego, Peru, in 2022 and 2013, respectively. His research interests include, in the beginning, robotics and then, Artificial Intelligence applied in agriculture, as well as Edge Intelligence, Distributed AI and Internet of Things. In addition to his research, he has worked on different entrepreneurship projects, trying to find and explode a link between academy and industry. Simon Pierre Dembele is a lecturer in Data management at the Data Systems research group the University of Tartu. He received his B.Sc. in Mathematics & Computer Science and M.Sc. degrees in software engineering and information processing from M’Hamed Bougara University of Boumerdes, Algeria, in 2009 and 2011, respectively. He continued his Ph.D. studies at National Engineering School for Mechanics and Aerotechnics (ISAE-ENSMA), Poitiers, France, advised by Ladjel Bellatreche, focusing mainly on Database system energy efficiency and optimization, getting the Ph.D. in 2021. His research focuses on database optimization, query processing, and energy-aware data management. Miika Hannula is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Computer Science of the University of Tartu, and a University Researcher (0.15) at the University of Helsinki. He obtained a PhD in mathematics at the University of Helsinki in 2015 and was awarded the title of docent in mathematical logic at the same university in 2022. Before coming to Tartu, he has also worked at the University of Auckland in 2015-18. Hannula’s researcher interests are broadly in the mathematical aspects of data management and logic in computer science.

Prof. Sherif Sakr was the Head of Data Systems Group at the Institute of Computer Science, University of Tartu from June 2018 till September 2020. He received his PhD degree in Computer and Information Science from Konstanz University, Germany in 2007. He received his BSc and MSc degrees in Computer Science from the Information Systems department at the Faculty of Computers and Information in Cairo University, Egypt, in 2000 and 2003 respectively. Before joining the University of Tartu, he held appointments in several international organizations including University of New South Wales (Australia), Macquarie University (Australia), Data61/CSIRO (Australia), Microsoft Research (USA), Nokia Bell Labs (Ireland) and King Saud Bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences (Saudia Arabia). He also held several visiting appointments at Humboldt-Universitat zu Berlin (Germany), University of Zurich (Switzerland) and Technical Unversity of Dresden (Germany).
Prof. Sakr’s research interest is data and information management in general, particularly in big data processing systems, big data analytics, data science and big data management in cloud computing platforms. Assoc Prof. Radwa El Shawi is the Head of Data Systems Group at the Institute of Computer Science, University of Tartu. She received her PhD in Information Technology from Sydney University, Australia, in 2013. She received her BSc and MSc degrees in Computer Engineering from the Computer Engineering department at the Arab Academy for Science and Maritime Transport, Egypt, in 2005 and 2008, respectively.
Dr. El Shawi’s research interests include Automated Machine Learning (AutoML), Explainable Artificial Intelligence, Big Data analytics, and Medical Informatics. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Dr. El Shawi has substantially contributed to numerous research projects. Dr. El Shawi’s research contributions are evident through her extensive publication record, with over 50 refereed research publications in international journals and conferences.
